Blue Flag

The Sarapiquí River is one of the most valuable and beautiful natural resources in the region but also one of the cleanest rivers in Costa Rica. This clear water river rises in the Braulio Carrillo National Park and covers a total length of 85 kilometers, most of them near the road and many towns. This river in related with the beginning of tourist activity in the region. Today Sarapiquí is consolidated as a tourist destination not only for nature tourism, but for adventure tourism, being recognized as one of the favorite rivers for rafting in Costa Rica.

In order to protect the river, it was created in 2011 the local organization to belong to the "Blue Flag National Program" in the category of Micro-Watersheds. Blue Flag is a successful Costa Rican program develops to protect beaches. It was extended to 11 different categories related with environmental education, public health and environmental protection. Sarapiquí got its first award of 1 star in 2012. In 2014 the area involved was expanded from 12 km to 27 km, covering the entire route for tourism use. At the fourth time, the region achieves the fifth star which is the highest level. By 2015, we managed to keep the 4 stars. Blue Flag has become a model that guarantees the protection and cleaning of this important river for future generations.
